I heard that is bad for managers to lose people in their teams, but want expecting this aggressive behavior. I wanted to switch teams. I was in Creative Intelligence (formerly Financial Intelligence). I told my manager that I wanted to move before doing that, to be professional and honest (BIG MISTAKE!). That gave him the time to prepare and send to the"new" manager a document with fake arguments to avoid my movement, he blocked me. Two months later I was going to take 3 weeks of vacations and just before that, he informed me that I was entered to the Pivot program. I read the document and was full of lies. I tried to complain to HR, but they were in the manager's side all the time. Zero protection to the employee. In HR they told me that until 2018 there was an instance to appeal to being entered to Pivot, but that instance doesn't exist anymore. So I was entered to Pivot even if the reasons exposed were lies. I was offered to quit or make a project impossible to finish in about 35 business days. A higher degree engineer saw those conditions and told me that were about 6 months of work. I decided to quit. I am not for such corporative manipulations of some manager that only cares about showing performance killing Engineer's careers. Until the last day he was an hypocrite, telling that he cared about my career... My career passion was in the org that I tried to move and he blocked. So the advice is, if you want to switch teams/org DON'T TELL YOUR MANAGER!
Did you have good relationships with your manager? Was his reaction surprise?
Yeah managers arent your friends. This industry sucks dick. You thought you were doing a good and professional thing by telling them. A lot of engineers have fallen into the same trap, not realizing that everyone is a fucking snake. HR is never your friend. The minute you go to HR, they are thinking of how to get rid of you. Even if your concern is 100% valid.
What is the nationality of this manager?
They are all the same dude - it’s coming from the Top - they have a quota to fulfill its called URA. If you tell them you are leaving beforehand you are opening up for a PIP
No, they are not the same. Trust me.
Realize that Amazon is full of terror and death awaits every corner. Never tell your manager anything.
This is everywhere irrespective of any company.
Never be honest with your Manager, sir! This is against the principles of employee/employer.
Another point is that contrary to popular belief, HR is not there for the employees. They're there to protect the company FROM the employees. Think about it. Brilliant move decades ago by corporate minds to get the inside scoop on their people and mitigate their damages.
Yah. Unfortunately some companies require you to notify your manager as one of the steps to switching teams and before actual interviews I did just that. Got a new pos manager, within 4 months made the effort to connect with another opportunity inside the company, even met with the other manager over lunch. Notified my current manager of my desire to leave. She seemed receptive to me leaving her group. 1 week later I get an email from the other manager saying he doesn't think I would be a good fit for his group. He and I actually got along really well during our meet. My current manager railroaded me. I ended up just quitting a month later.
I know tons of people in Creative Intelligence and I think you should spit out the portion you're in (APM/Chronicle/PI/Imaging Tech/Imagine services) and I'll relay the blind feedback. If you're comfortable enough - DM me. I hate this crap and will probably have strong feedback against this. This is bullshit
Op go for it. You have nothing to lose now.
I am sorry for what happened to you. Always look out for yourself first. If you wanted to leave and the manager wants to replace someone that’s a part of his job. I quit microsoft recently and was wanting to do the same..tell my manager of my decision to leave, so he’ll have time to replace me with someone. I was advised not to and I believe it’s right.
