I've never tried their "meat" myself, but I read that Starbucks will soon start offering the Beyond Meat variant of their egg sandwich across their 1,400 stores in Canada. It's an undoubtedly profitable move for Beyond Meat but also an interesting one given their close partnership with Dunkin' - apparently the two worked closely last year to formulate special sausage patty for Dunkin' breakfast sandwiches. Beyond Meat's stock price went up after this announcement, of course, but their shares have been highly volatile since the IPO. What are your thoughts on the company's prospect - especially for those that have tasted their product?
I’m pretty bearish on the company. The space is super saturated with a bunch of different meat replacement companies popping up and getting funded everyday. As stated above, don’t see a major value proposition to these types of products. Seems as of now that they’re just doing well cause of trends in eating. Wouldn’t invest personally
Like I am bearish on Bitcoin but bullish on blockchain, I am bearish on Beyond and bullish on meat substitutes in the long run. My primary concern is also health and I’m disappointed in the nutrient quality thus far of the options. The product itself is very tasty and close to meat, but health wise it would be a hundred times better to eat a chicken breast. I don’t think there are enough die hard climate activists to produce demand. There will be competitors and copiers.
I think it’s a good idea, but I do wonder what the real reason to eat Beyond Meat is. Yes, it’s better for the environment because it doesn’t require cows / animals, which take up tons of space and create methane, but the health profile is similar to beef (with more unknown ingredients). I think for it to be a game changer, it would need to be better for the planet and healthier, while also tasting great at a similar price point. Until that day, I’m skeptical that it will be more than a substitute for real meat.
