I have a friend who works for Deloitte and he referred me for an audit position. Since he works in IT, he had a colleague (audit manager) look over my resume. The colleague suggested two positions for me to apply to. I apllied through my referral about a month ago but havent heard back yet. He said that December is busy and they tend to not hire during those months. My only concern is that I do not have public accounting experience. However I was an inventory audit manager for eight years and I also have a bachelors degree in accounting. Since the Big 4 is so competitive, I am a little nervous that my resume may be too weak. Any thoughts? The positions I applied for are internal audit associate and audit/accounting readiness associate.
Deloitte does have winter shutdown where the firm is off for a week; Deloitte Disconnect and that delays a lot of things.
Kpmg SF has some openings and may be easier to get into.
give it a sec you applied over the holidays
Since you applied for associate level positions, I don't think lack of prior public accounting experience would factor as negatively as you think. But given your 8 years of experience (even though they cannot and should not discriminate based on age), that might put you several years ahead of a lot of their associates who are usually straight out of college. Doesn't mean it can't happen though, just that it is not the norm (I was also one of the "older" associates given my prior work experience. As others mentioned, dec and jan are slow for hiring given firm shutdown and vacations and such. Be patient and good luck!
From my experience (I work at PwC) you tend to hear back within two weeks or so after applying. But I’m not sure how Deloitte is, maybe they are busy. I know In PwC we have a winter shutdown and that delays things, not sure if Deloitte does as well. I would ask the audit manager for feedback on your resume.
