I got two job offers. One is managing the Data science department, reporting to VP of AI, at a public company with a few thousands employees. Total comp $400k. I have a few director level friends/allies, and it should be an easy job. It’s also in a low COL region, cheaper than SoCal. Another offer F/G M1 (a ML team) total $560k. Unknown team dynamics, no ally in upper management. YOE12
Uhh reporting to VP of AI is still a nobody.
Thank you for waking me up. >_<
F/G to smaller company is easy, other way round is not. Try it with F/G, if it doesn't work out, you can easily go to a smaller company later.
Which one will you regret more if you didn't take it?
400k is a lot. It's enough
I report to VP of Product Development. Still a nobody.
You'll probably be able to influence alot more in the smaller company, might be friendlier environment as well. FANG will pay better, but probably way more politics. Hows the WLB for the small one?
Small companies do not necessarily have less politics. I have once worked at a mid sized company where politics was as amusing as in dramas.
I agree, company culture is extremely important, but the bigger the company get, the more politics there is
WLB is very good at this small company. No extra hours.
I would go for the small company, sounds like besides lower pay which is quite high, you will get a happier place to work with.
i agree - working with people you like (for half of your waking hours every weekday) cannot be understated in importance
What are you optimizing for in life? DM me if you'd like. I was recently in a similar situation.
Kids are very young. Want to spend time with them, as well as saving for their college tuition.
Those two objectives are at odds unfortunately :) WLB will be better at the larger org.
