Hi all, I'm in a situation where I'm not sure what to do and hoping to get some guidance in order to make a decision. Currently a Manager within the Strategy consulting team at a Big4, but I've been interviewing for a few months looking to renew my energy. The search has now culminated in two tangible offers: (A) Senior Manager within Digital & Customer at one of the Big4. Base: $225,000 ; Bonus: 10-15% ; So TC: ~$255,000. (B) GM-level role at Uber. Base: $165,000 ; Bonus: $25,000 ; RSU: $100,000/4yrs ; so TC of $215,000 Location is somewhere where these numbers are a decent salary and I live comfortably. (Not SF, NYC, etc.) Additional details for context: - YOE: 7 - Have only worked in consulting my entire career (hence why I started to look for something new). - The role at Uber presents an opportunity to do something new that isn't consulting and possibly takes me closer to FAANG, startups, or VC. - As some of you may know, the consulting lifestyle is draining (travel, ridiculous timelines, and so on.), but I've been on a solid upward trajectory. Though I've never really seen myself as a Partner. - The role at Uber gets me excited, but every time I look up Uber on this platform, there is a lot of negative sentiments towards the company. Thank you. EDIT: Would also appreciate commentary/thoughts if you've voted! #careeradvice #big4 #consulting #uber #ey #deloitte #pwc @Uber @Deloitte @EY @pwc
Join Uber. After a year move to FAANG.
Uber is very transparent internally and still growing 30-40% YoY for Rides, 60% for Eats. As a GM you get exposure and learning that’s rare. You can always go back to Big4, Uber can open FANG doors. PS: one of the previous GMs of a country is now GPM (Group Product Manager) at Uber, having 1:1s with Dara. Not saying this is typical but from a GM you have a lot of opportunities, more than Big4.
Thank you for this! Really appreciate your thoughts. It’s things like this that is great to know and certainly helps with decision-making. Another area of concern is layoffs, any thoughts in that? I’d imagine joining at a city leadership level means you’re safe from current layoffs (as long as you meet performance expectations), or else why hire for the position if you’re going to fire later?
Isn't the TC low for a GM level role. I mean a mid level engineer would have a higher compensation than this.
Might be related to the country it will be in? CoL is much lower than your typical large metropolitan cities or main centers like SF, NYC, etc.
RSU package is very, very low given (1) your experience, (2) the role and (3) what I've heard from friends at uber. Restricts your upside severely. Not ideal, since you're going to be through a tough time with little/no upside. That said, it'll be a good Segway into big tech.
At this Big 4, is SM one level below partner? If so that’s amazing for 7 yoe. If you think you could make the push the partner, you’d be on the path towards 1M+ compensation
Thanks! Yes, that’s one level from Partner. Common to be an SM for 4-7 years. But really appreciate the kind words. The challenge is... I’ve never really seen myself as a Partner and thought of consulting as a stepping stone initially in my career, but 7 years later... here I am!!!!
that is not a GM comp; are you sure about the level?
OP I am now in the same boat, what decision did u make? And what made you make that decision? Need some help badly right now.
The big 3, Bain, BCG and Mck are known for having cream of the crop. Think it like this: You can get into UBER with state college degree and some connections. You cannot do the same for big 3. You have to have that ‘it’ factor to be in. Ultimately it’s your call if you want to be Bentley or Toyota
The current offer I have is with a "Big4" (Deloitte / EY / PwC / KPMG), so not really getting up into the MBB.
Big 4 consulting is green card handcuffs don’t do it to yourself
