Sorry in advance for the wall of text, this'll probably get buried anyway. After only days on the app I'm frequently awed by the number of people sticking up for each other to give advice and share their stories on the tech industry. That said, it makes me so sad that to enjoy it I have to wade through so much toxic bullshit to get there. Practically every day there's at least one top post about how giving minorities representation in tech is literally destroying the whole industry, or insert-anecdotes-here about "I haven't personally seen discrimination so therefore anyone who experiences it is lying or a whiny snowflake." A few days ago the top post was literally a thread about people just talking about how much they secretly hated homeless people. Seriously, what the hell? How is that even relevant to tech? I love working in tech, and I love the idea of Blind. I love collaborating with others to innovate and create and give back to the world. But this kind of toxicity is just not okay. If this app is going to survive long-term, we need to promote a positive community that emphasizes support, goodwill, and understanding over hate, elitism, and ignorance. And to do that we need better moderation tools. Reporting is a good start but it only works if mods actually step in. Every other major online community has this. Don't let this just become a tech-focused 4chan or voat. /rant EDIT: lots of good comments on here but a lot more that perfectly illustrate my point and its importance. Also seeing a lot of condescending "go back to your safe space" from people insisting they like it unmodded because they think it's the only place they can say what's on their mind. Safe space much?
The toxicity seems to work for Reddit. I think they are going for a similar model.
inb4 "You'll come around" or "typical sjw snowflake"
You sir (or mam?), have won this thread. 🙌🏼
😪
Although I took issue with your post, I'm talking about an overall trend that yours was only a part of. Posts just like it are commonplace here, and THAT is the problem I wanted to talk about. That aside, I wanted this to be a conversation with the community, because this is a community problem. Not a personal one with you. If you'd like to PM for further clarification, I'd be happy to. My opinion is not meant to invalidate yours any more than yours was meant to invalidate those of the women who have experienced very real discrimination in tech.
I think that if we've learned anything from the current presidency it's that a lot more people are harboring fear and anger than we thought. And that contributes to a lot of toxic and defensive opinions. Anonymous social networks seem nice because they can reveal what people are really thinking. But sometimes you just don't want to know. Us the block feature. You'll be happy to open contentious posts and see people reacting to comments you can't see.
This reminds me of Black Mirror
Yes use the 'I want to live in an Echo chamber' feature
If Blind can't handle the toxicity issue, it will follow the death path that Secret was faced.
Agreed, any topic becomes toxic here, is discouraging
If your style of "discourse" cannot stand up to a little bit of criticism, it is not proper discourse.
this community has been around for months and is valuable to many people as is. perhaps you should try to understand it a little before demanding that it change to suit your taste. have some fucking respect.
If you read the first part of my post you'd see I acknowledge and appreciate that. Blind is doing a great thing, and most of the community is great; I'm still using it for exactly that reason. To try to constructively discuss a way it could improve is the opposite of disrespectful -- it means I like it and I want to see it grow. So before you assume that anyone who doesn't assume everything is peachy and perfect is making sweeping generalizations, maybe you should have enough respect to actually read and think about the post.
Been on here for months and I gotta say OP's post is justified. Thanks for being an example of it PM_ME_CODE
If we want tech to be sustainable and survive we'll definitely need less toxic people.
I think we need less soft people who are so sensitive to everything.
People are free to think whatever they want, but if the tech space is full of people unwilling to listen to others and stuck in their crude opinions then no one will want to be in it
The discussion around the homeless issue brought some good points on all sides. Uncomfortable as it was, it was a the kind of discussion that can only happen with any degree of honestly in a place like this, where we aren’t all pretending to be better people than we are
There are plenty of existing communities where people can talk about whether homeless people deserve basic human respect or not besides this tech and tech industry-focused forum.
And there are many other tech forums. So? It’s related. It’s a bigger problem here than anywhere else in the country, I believe. And you can see I am from Zendesk, right? Our offices in particular are surrounded by aggressive, high, self-abusing, street-shitting persons who deserve respect
