Anyone have experience, or an actual job working with blockchain? It's a buzzword and interesting concept but I'm curious to see if it is actually being applied in situations other than cryptocurrencies
My 2 cents: Current blockchain architecture is a fad. It works well for systems where there is no trust amongst participants (eg bitcoin) but generally the way businesses are run and money is made is via dealing with trusted parties. There is no point having everyone run their own infrastructure to be part of a network when everyone is trusted - itās inefficient. Look at git - the distributed model is one of its biggest selling points, yet everyone just centralises on github.com. Iām sure a better architecture will emerge in the future, so itās definitely an area to watch, but it doesnāt seem to lend itself to many good use cases at the moment that can scale and also make money for the network. Thatās not to say there isnāt money to be made as a SWE right now - many large companies, mine included, are paying consultants to write / POC blockchain solutions, but in my experience theyāre solutions looking for problems and not viable.
I agree, it doesn't seem that there is a realized need for a ledger in a lot of real applications, especially in networks where trust is a big factor in business dealings. It seems right now the main attractor for blockchain is the ability to pay overseas easily, but from my experience visa and Mastercard make that pretty easy already, for like a 3% fee. Could it be cheaper than that 3% somehow to facilitate crypto transactions?
@YINR12, 3% is one issue, it could be cheaper, second is the time taken and the flexibility. Chances are you don't even have to transfer to a foreign currency in an ideal environment, which is also what they aim it, so potential is 0% fees there, with the transparency.
Check out IBM. But then you'd have to work at IBM
Donāt check out IBM. Instead, make a Steam Greenlight game about blockchain using Unreal 4 to make more š
Check us out chainalysis.com
Hey, how do you like it there?
Where were you for the last 2-3 years š There are a lot of startups (many have failed or turned out to be a bit scammy), even big companies like FB with project Libra. Look up Smart contracts. Interesting concept for other ways to use Blockchain.
