Hello Everyone. I would appreciate if you guys can help me pick between the two offers. Bloomberg : 135k+15k+10k(relocation) Team will be decided after a 3 month boot camp. Location : New York Amazon Alexa Smart Home team (machine learning) : 120k + 35k (joining bonus first year) Stocks : 60k ( 5-15-40-40 ) Location : Seattle Myself: 2 years of experience + a recent master's degree. If somebody can tell me about the Amazon Team in particular, it would be really helpful. Thanks for your inputs :)
Amazon for better TC growth rate and better brand
Thanks for your input. I can understand the Amazon brand in tech, however I am not sure about the TC growth rate. Do you have any data ?
Bloomberg has only two levels - SE and SSE. Even after 10 years you will still be SSE. Your salary even after 10 years will not be more than 250-275 at most. At Amazon you can grow until L6/L7. Even at L6, you will easily reach 300-350+. L7 is 400-450+.
Have you tried for SDE position with AWS? If not, you should talk to HR for a role with AI/ML team in AWS. You will have better job & compensation prospects after couple of years if you want to move to some other company. Moreover higher you go up the ladder the more money you make in tech companies. Also, cost of living is far greater in NYC therefore the TC for Amazon comes out far ahead.
Thanks for the advice. I have already rejected 3 teams before finalizing the Alexa Smart Home team. I think I will stick with this team in the meantime. I agree with the cost aspect of NYC aswell. However I just wish I could have lived there đ
Ask for more from Bloomberg. I am a new grad and got a better package.
I'm on the smart home machine learning team. It's a great team with two high impact projects, a self-controlled roadmap, low ticket burden, and almost no churn (one person out of 12 has left since inception 1.75 years ago). Manager is fantastic. Senior engineers are very competent and very nice. Weekly ML reading group. Best job I've ever had. No free snacks though (unless you walk to the banana stand).
Sde2s have lots of ownership. Good prospects for promotion.
Do you always need a rock solid ML experience to get into these teams ?
BB gives grads 170k TC so I think you know the needful to do.
Amazon has better brand name but I never heard of Bloomberg ppl having trouble getting interviews at most places anyways. Seen plenty go to a FAANG, hedge fund, unicorn, etc. Shouldn't be a major deciding factor if it's bb vs amzn... Tc wise if u can make sde2 at amzn quickly that's a big bump in pay and more stock. If you're good can hit that in a year, if not many people hit it in 2 Team and project wise amzn had much more variety of product and all the team are using latest tech stacks. BB has a variety but not as muxh. Some teams have a pretty modern stack but some not. I would say if you have reasons to like blomberg whether it's location, people, company, or team then do it. If you're just like idk then amzn is a safer bet I guess.
Thanks for the comment. I agree with most of the points. A major reason why I was confused was because I was excited about moving to New York. However I guess that will have to wait. Thanks anyways :)
Bloomberg can easily go to 150k+20k+30k for you I feel given your 2 year experience and a masters. Just ask for it from HR. They have surely low balled you.
Amazon has better brand name, but if you're a single guy I hear Seattle is a shit place, so consider that. Any way you can get the Amazon offer changed to NYC?
Go for BB
Whatâs your role & master degree?
My role is that of an SDE in both the companies. My master's degree was in computer science (my course focus was on Machine Learning and AI)
