Hi Blind community, I recently got rejected after the phone screen round for the Bloomberg new grad SDE role. I am a little confused because from my perspective the interview went pretty great: I solved the problem decently well while being vocal about my approach and discussing it with the interviewer, did dry runs through my code for multiple test cases, asked a bunch of questions for the last 10 minutes and was personable to the best of my abilities. The only reason I can think of is that most experiences that I read mentioned that the interviewer asked two questions but mine only asked me one. I have reached out to the recruiter to get feedback but haven’t heard back anything yet. I have other interviews coming up and don’t want to repeat my mistake so I am looking for any advice or recommendations. Thank you!
Don't worry op, I've heard rejections are quite random at bloomberg. Keep trying you 'll get something really good soon :)
Thank you for your kind words and reply! :)
I would do mock with someone and find if they can provide you some feedback.
Don’t beat yourself up. I’ve failed interviews I’ve done pretty well in but there are always things you don’t know happening behind the scene :) Dm me for squarespace’s referral if you want
It may really have nothing to do with you. Luck plays a role too
Just did my phone yesterday, finished in 10mins, just one question, follow up I didn’t have to code just explain and we ended interview 20mins before. Code was optimal, tested, went through time and space complexity, asked the interviewer 2 questions. Got the good news that I passed today. So I don’t think code is your problem. Is there anything else you think you could’ve done better?
I think it might be that I required more direction than what they were looking for but that’s sort of the only intuition I have :/
dont sweat it, friend its a numbers game tbh youre more than this interview, you will get next time or something even greater awaits you
Thank you everyone for your kind words! 🙌🏽
Don't forget this is all a numbers game. Sometimes you get interviewers that are good and others that are not as good. You could've solved the question that was not the way the interviewer was expecting, so they just start zoning out and being friendly instead of letting you know that they were expecting something else. Could be an inexperienced interviewer, this might have been their 3rd phone screen or something. Later on, they may realize they screwed up with this decision, but nothing can be done for you. Point is, don't be hard on yourself, keep trying, I'm rooting for you!
Don't expect feedback on the interview, I've only ever received feedback a handful of times. Simply put; someone else probably did better on the test than you or had more experience. Don't beat yourself up too much there are plenty of great companies to work at out there.
Thanks for your reply!! :)
