Hello,

A recruiter reached out to interview me for a position lower than the level I am interested in. The initial phone screen is completed and the second round is next week.

When should I bring up that I would like to be considered for a higher level? What is a good way to do this?

I made sure to emphasize my current level when I interviewed so they knew it was a consideration I had. I waited to bring up the level they were offering until after I received an offer, but that mostly because it wasn't clear to me the offer would come in at the lower level. You can do it during the phone screen if you want, or you can wait until you know more about the role. Just ask for clarification on the level that the role is being offered at and say if you're going to switch jobs out wouldn't make much sense for you to essentially take a demotion.

Just be honest with the recruiter. They want you to be happy if they make you an offer.

  • I think the levels are mostly related to YOE (in aerospace, or direct experience). Degrees can just give you a couple years bump

I was a staff at a sensor supplier.
They interviewed me at senior level (blue don’t have a staff level) and downgraded me to level 3.

Not a single bad remark during interview except that I don’t have aerospace background. I was in automotive all my career.

Felt too bad they would play that card. Nobody at their company at level 3 has phd + 10 YoE.

Know someone recently accepted an offer as a manager, in software. ~ 10 YOE, a little north of $185k.
A second person offered a L4, senior engineer, $185K, ~20 YOE. This person isn’t interested in management (who had years of people management experience).
