i was interviewing at a startup before Cisco made their offer and I realized why recruiters are needed.

The founder was incredibly slow to come up with the offer letter, didn’t give me verbal numbers said just to wait for the letter and gave no explanation of benefits or stock comp.

Addmittedly the offer was not bad but his lack of responses and hoping I’d accept a lower number by just shoving the paperwork at me was weird.

I declined and he got personally offended and started saying I’m unprofessional and some other nonsense. I understand to a founder the company is your baby and of course everyone would want to work there but man, you need a recruiter to shield people from your “passion”.

  • Yep! I’m chatting with a couple startups now and they’re pretty inept at this part, and both are unusually ignorant of what’s actually going on in the job market. One claims to pay 90% of market rate, while thinking that $135k is a top-level TC. I don’t quite know how to reason with that.

And they both have recruiters who are about as incompetent as the standard agency recruiter.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet with a shitty founder. Hiring and Recruiting should be one of the top priorities for a founder. Most founders neglect it but honestly creating a good core team to implement the product is crucial for moving forward. Founders then use the other time to set direction and vision. Sounds like this founder doesn't understand business and doesn't understand his role.

Did you do the obvious thing of telling him you were also talking to another company and had a deadline? Or are you made that he couldn’t have guessed that?

I told him I had multiple offers and a deadline. He came in 3 days late. From him saying he’ll give “an offer” to seeing the numbers on the offer letter was 10 days.

So it’s on him man. It’s not about a recruiter. It’s just an error on his part. For what it’s worth at apple one guy I interviewed was awesome, recruiter was slow, then my manager was slow, and by the time we made an offer, google had given him a new role. This was a mistake on our part and I hope one day to work with that guy. Your guy either was not listening or just made a mistake. It is what it is.
