Boeing First-Line Mfg Manager Opening

I’m looking into this opening in Renton, WA. Anyone have any experiece w/Boeing on the manufacturing side? Trying to get some insight into the position/culture/job satisfaction trend. Also any tips for the process or anyone internal who would like to reference would be great. Thanks!

Bottom line: you’ll probably be treated better as an employee, but will be paid less, and find some of the corporate rules on how business is conducted a little frustrating compared to Tesla. Read on for why I think that. I work at a different aerospace company and not much in manufacturing. That said, I can tell you this: the culture is going to be geared much more towards safety and quality with a lot more procedural hurdles and industrial standards compliance in how work is done. It’s not going to be like Tesla I can’t speak to specifically to company culture there, but since companies like Boeing do a lot of government contract work, they are constrained by federal acquisition regulations, which I think positively impacts how employees are treated (while also being a drag on compensation relative to other companies.) Boeing has a huge commercial business relative to their government contract work. Nevertheless, the corporate policies that are driven by federal regulations will tend to suffuse into the non-government contract areas. I do not know how Boeing’s-internal structure might firewall their commercial business from their government, which will impact how much is takes place.

That’s a solid and helpful outlook. Thanks for sharing your view! I doubt there are many places out there much like Tesla right now, both in good ways and bad. From what I’ve been able to gather, the position pays around $110-120k total comp, which is about what I would need. I’m also looking to move to the Seattle area as I’ve got some family there. Sounds like my main concern may be the absence of highly mission-driven goals and lack of the positive side of pressure, which I personally find energizing...something I’ll definitely need to consider.

I think the mission of building a safer 737 MAX is pretty cool. If you work on the gov contracts side of things the missions are WAAAAY cool. There’s also a wider variety of things to work on and learn about . More varied product lines

I’ve been to that plant in Renton. Cool area around it. The traffic sucks on the freeways but there are more positives working for you
