I have seen comments in Glassdoor that Booking.com is not good for software engineer. Since it is not a tech company, the quality of the software is poor. Is this true? How is like to work there?
If booking.com isn't a tech company, why is Expedia considered one?
Maybe they're not stuck with 80% of their codebase in a 90s language
Well, at least booking.com is stuck with 80% of Booking Holdings.
There was a thread on Booking.com on Blind a couple of months ago. General consensus was that it should be avoided if possible. On the plus side, pay is apparently decent, & Amsterdam is a great place to live in
+ Wlb is amazing. + One of the better payer in Amsterdam (only Uber would rival in TC) + Amsterdam - Perl (though its changing) - Business is plateauing (personal opinion) - You won't grow as engineer. - Middle management is poor.
"You won't grow as engineer" - I have heard and read similar comments. This is very important to me. What is the reason? Is it because of the poor management and/or quality of work?
Management is quite bad and a lot of cases where effort is not properly recognised. Also Perl
Believe every single word on this review. https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Booking-com-RVW24078886.htm
I got promoted from technical to TL to MSD (manger software development) role. I didn't kiss ass, just did my job best that I can. There is lot opportunities to code in Java. My experience is pretty much 100% opposite than above review. I had bad managers, even director... I had good ones, but who thinks that they will find a company with only good in it suffers of huge grass is greener on the other side syndrome. Booking is the best place I worked in my 15+years career because of good culture, grow development and appreciation and reward for a good performance.
That last sentence... Lol
Well that is my experience and I believe it. No bullshit, I don't get anything for this - lol Maybe you need to come to my track.
Read reviews, facts are there and nobody can deny them. After some years Java was adopted it is still not used many places and almost everywhere Perl will touch you. Nothing new technically and business could never build a good or new product, and old one relies on google search, that is why growth is flattened, and will continue that direction.
It really depends on what to compare it with. It's not the worst place ever, but when I worked there (despite having b.com specified, I no longer work there) there were a bunch of problems in terms of Tech and Management. E.x.: 1. old tech stack 2. cargo cult in many places 3. Management became much worse in past 2 years. I'd say it stated in 2-3 months after CEO changed and became much worse after precious CTO left. One of the most hilarious examples: "we want to make booking.com the best place to work, so starting from now you will be penalized if you work from home or come to the office after 10 am." 4. It seems for me that all the growth is slowing down, but to show good numbers costs are being cut down, of course employees will only suffer from that. 5. You can work at 10-20% of your potential and receive "meets expectations". 6. In IT it's still good work-life balance as it can easily be 9-5 and nothing more than that. 7. Amsterdam and Netherlands are great place to live. It's actually one of my favorite and I feel comfortable interacting with Dutch people (I'm not Dutch myself). 8. It can give you an example on how NOT to do things, in many aspects. Also I had an impression that b.com is a place where people who failed interviews for Amazon, Google, Facebook goes before their next attempt, just to relax and focus on what's important for them. For that purpose I still think it's an ok place.
Booking Blind is very toxic, way more than the company actually is. The company has a problem of having hired about 15-20% people wrongly, which generate cultural friction. If you're competent, hard working, self driven and not in the autism spectrum (I'm actually serious), Booking will reward you well and you'll be able to drive great initiatives. Booking requires devs to have great communication skills in order to succeed, just good at tech might put you in a bad spot.

I don't know about booking.com but Dutch ladies are probably the best looking anywhere in the world, at least of the places I've traveled to.
The average height of Dutch women is over 6ft so be warned my brothers.
Yes, tall, skinny, beautiful blondes. Be warned.
