Go Gogol
Grapes of Wrath. Because it mirrors the brutal real struggles of the world, the very basic battles, nothing glorious and in the process makes you more sympathetic to the human race. Tremendously sad but yet inspires hope. It has a unifying influence rather that isolating the reader. There is no hero and it doesn't make you wanna fight all evil alone and win big battles individually or something. But just asks you to understand and support each other. That's just what I felt after reading it.
