To get it out of the way, yes, I acknowledge the privilege of even having this option, and no, this is not a brag. I'm asking here because I don't really have mentors I can trust with this kind of stuff. I appreciate your candid advice. YoE: 8.5. Time at Google: 1.5 years, L4. TC: $355K. FB E5 offer, (post negotiation): TC: $415k yearly + $100K sign on ($440 / yr amortizing sign on over 4 years) Stay at Google, pros: - I'm getting paid a lot with low performance expectations (yay negotiation + stock appreciation + refreshers!) - Have great reputation within low stress team. Work life balance is amazing. - Have clear path to L5 promotion by end of next year while pretty much coasting. Stay at Google, cons: - I don't feel challenged, nor like I'm learning at work. Bit bored TBH. Am I too young to stagnate? - Likely have to wait until end of next year to start accruing tenure to L6 promo. - Running some numbers, even if I get promo'ed to L5 at end of next year, I wouldn't catch up to what FB is offering me TC-wise until I make L6 (refreshers lag promo by a year, by the time the L5 refreshers "take over", my appreciated initial grant that's fueling my high comp will have depleted) Switch to Facebook, pros: - Immediate TC increase, plus E5 refreshers starting in 2022 (vs L5 refreshers starting in 2023 at Google) - Continue learning and growing skill-set wise, more scope, etc - Bigger multipliers if I want to perform - Start accruing tenure to be promoted to E6 now Cons: - Likely give up work life balance and take on stress - Have to re-build reputation - I've job hopped quite a bit... Staying at the big G for ~3+ years would give my resume continuity - CA+Federal Taxes make each incremental $ in TC less worth it - There are always unknown risks (politics, team dynamics, re-orgs, cancelled products, etc) - Working at FB FB offer: Base: 200K Equity: 750K Bonus target: 15% (30K) Sign on: 100K
Bored L5 at G here. Moving to Netflix in a few months. My brain started to decompose doing nothing at G. I don't consider moving protos around as anything other than busy work
How does the TC of your new offer at Netflix compare to your current L5 comp at Google? I knew people said Google was a great place to "retire", but I hadn't internalized how real the stereotype is until after I joined.
+100K after stock appreciation
Stay at Google. Learning FB proprietary and open-source software is overrated and boring. Also FB is an evil company that is responsible for a lot of the antagonism that plagues modern society.
😈
Not related to the post but why such a weird Vietnamese nickname? 😂 (It translate to “grandpa fish” for those who don’t know)-
Great pickle to be in, whatever you decide to do. Were you able to find an interesting and more challenging opportunity within G and going there instead AND asking your lead/skip level, to fast track your L6 promo?
I've only been at Google for 1.5 years, so staying in my current role is the surest path to get a promo to L5 at this point. Changing projects will add to learning, but may add workload plus risk to promotion. There may be a compromise worth considering. Having enough trouble "expediting" the promo to L5 to begin with, so fast track to L6 not really an option =S.
Gotcha OP. My only suggestion would be to shoot for a clear path to L6 not L5 since it sounds like you can hit that easily. With L6 tho, you can get G to give you a road map that will likely be more challenging and a timeframe to achieve it. Then you can compare that map and the work+time involved to the FB offer.
Imo stay at G. Even a 100k bump is not worth great WLB and promo guarantee.
Technically I don't need the promo guarantee at FB, because I'd be taking the post-promo position just by virtue of switching. But I hear you, the WLB part is huge and why this is a dilemma in the first place.
There is no such thing as promo guarantee.
stay, people content with being L4 with 8 YOE will have a hard time
How many hrs a week do you work
25. chill teams exist everywhere. But you have to decide if you want an accelerated promo or not. That determines if you have a rough experience in a relaxed team as well. In general, people who have poor wlb are grinding for promos.
Is your FB offer in cali? Is this the max now?
Cali. Not sure if it's the max, but it's what I got
What startegy did you use to get this offer. What was first FB offer?
355k is high for L4, is RSU refresh included?
Yea, refresher and appreciation and actual bonus with multipliers is included
That’s a great TC for L4. Would you mind sharing your numbers at G with refreshers. I am considering a move to G with 290k TC.
For 100k I would take wlb. Curious tho what you choose so update us!
Thanks! Will plan on updating!
Thanks. If it was 100k to 200k I'd say Def jump but over 300k, I think you should enjoy your life and use that time for other things that bring you joy?
stay at google if you can’t find a team at fb that’s not as chill. Find excitement and challenge (and spend your energy) in other aspects of life: investment, other incomes sources, family, etc.
I've never had so much time before, lol! Spending plenty of time with family. Other income sources is one I've been thinking about, but haven't pulled trigger on... Any suggestions welcome!
Yeah, play poker 😂
, Challenge yourself for another decade before going to stasis. Work Life Balance is overrated. If you are Engineer, you spend all your life learning how to create, so go create things. You will be surprised how good you feel.
Well, you can also argue that Work Life Balance is underrated, especially if you have young kids. Kids are only going to be young for a few years and a good WLB in those years will matter immensely.
Do you have a life?
