Have you ever heard about any boss (manager) being put on PIP? Yes/no? If yes, please share the story and company.
You never seen partners and gm’s getting their reports taken away and then taking a “much needed break?” at Microsoft? Then they just go away after the sabbatical.
Why is the assumption that the boss is male? ("he was fired", "he survived")
Do you have blue hair?
There is more than one female leader at GM and not all of them have blue hair :)
Absolutely. Sometimes bosses get too comfortable with their jobs and then their boss realizes that and see younger managers adding more value with relatively lower pay.
I’ve seen L7 managers put on PIP at Amazon
Of course. L8s can either find scapegoats or get fired themselves, right? :)
Even ceo's can be fired.
I've successfully (and deliberately) got my own boss at a previous company fired. He was just making lots of stupid decisions and promoting people "yes sayers" agreeing with him. Found some people who had similar thoughts and talked to CTO and 2 months later he was gone.
My interim manager ( a while back ) and his right hand guy were both told to find something new ... they were giving like 6 months ...

I have put managers on PIP (and dismissed them), but more commonly I clip their bonuses and start writing very detailed documentation of their failings in their reviews. I am also candid with them early on when they mess up.
What if they improve? Would you still be writing detailed reviews ? How long you have to keep writing it?
