Moving with family to Boston from Midwest. Where do people live? Planning to be in apartment for a year or two. Any suggestions with place to stay, commute, preferably with good preschools? My office is in Downtown Boston.
Cambridge/Somerville area is nice. Not as expensive as downtown Boston and close access to everything
Live somewhere on the Red line - Green line sucks and driving in is also probably bad (haven’t done it, but my colleagues have and they don’t love it). Davis Square in Cambridge and Arlington, or Somerville are all places where you can pay < 3000 for a 2 bedroom. Also everything is easy by bike when the weather isn’t shit...
Also Waltham is good with the commuter rail
Thanks.. how is Quincy?
Somewhere near Porter square or Davis square. If you're fine with hanging out with homeless people, Central square is good too.
Every town and neighborhood except Dorchester and Roxbury is good. Back Bay is the best neighborhood if you can afford the rent. The east part of Fenway is almost as good as Back Bay with lower rent. If you love new construction, South Boston is a good choice. It has beach access there. Where do you work?
Will be joining Wayfair
Then back bay is your best choice
Newton or Brookline if you have kids(because of school system) and want to live near T
I live in Brookline and it’s a great place to live but it is rather expensive. The schools and neighborhoods are great and there’s a lot to do here. It’s about. 35 minute commute to downtown via the green line which isn’t bad at all
Late to the game, but what's your budget?
I'd second Newton/Brookline for school aged kids. Depending on budget you can rent for a few years then buy a place. But the Brookline school system is one of the best in the country ( and walking distance to back bay )
Jamaica Plain is also a good and popular spot with a bunch of good preschools. It is a lottery to get into Boston schools, so it’s fine for 1-2 years. You’ll have plenty of green space in JP (much more than brookline) and be closer to downtown. The orange line is also quite good for getting to south station reliably on time. And it’s less crowded

Downtown is a good place to stay but pretty expensive. Close to it is Waltham, which is also nice. If your office is not very close to downtown or are comfortable traveling, consider Shrewsbury, it's cheap and good. North borough is also a decent place to stay. Wherever you stay, remember to take a covered parking. It might cost you a little, but you wouldn't want to spend 30mins everyday shoveling your car while standing in the cold.
