Google Prestige Taking a Hit

If you follow Google on LinkedIn, have you noticed their account commenting on tons of Google new hire posts recently?

While I’m not sure if this is the case or not, it’s giving an impression that Google is going on an insane hiring spree and kind of ruining the prestigious image they had, at least to me.

Prestige is seriously overrated. Big question is are you making an impact and creating something of value. I'd rather do that than coast along in a company.
Working at such a company means you can be interpreted as you may be smart but there are many other companies with smart-er people as well.
So if someone is shallow to derive their self worth through the company they work at or the title they have... so be it

Prestige is simply a way trying to impress people you don't care about anyhow. Such a person would feel miserable if Google or any such company would do poorly. So better not to outsource your own self worth to an external entity.

Lol. You have a vivid imagination

You may want to reread what I wrote earlier. I said exactly the same thing. Just a cautionary measure not to derive your self worth from extrinsically as it is a slippery slope.

It’s the opposite lol. I just accepted a Google offer and I feel like the perception that Google is on a giant hiring spree devalues me in the job market for future opportunities, however slightly that may be

Amazon, I don’t think you gotta worry about that. they’re trying to compete with the company you just left and Microsoft in the cloud. They gotta bring in more bodies to do that. If there’s anything that will hurt perception of Googlers, it will probably be: A. if Google has poor fiscal year results relative to those companies and others. B. Do something that is absolutely scandalous PR wise.

It seems everyone was dreaming to be a Googler someday, while I was playing with crayons and fighting with my sibling as a kid.

  • Well its kinda true that they are going on a hiring spree but why does that affect prestige? You make it sound like anyone can get it when it’s still more competitive than Harvard

Its also an echo chamber so it feels like a lot of people but when you add it up, its still a lot less compared to how many people apply

The only reason it has a lower acceptance rate than Harvard is because it takes no effort to apply

    • So having a lower barrier to entry makes it less competitive? I’m sorry but that’s not how supply and demand works. The reason more people apply to google than harvard is because more people want to be at google period. Harvard is for rich kids whose parents can afford the ridiculous tuition unless you’re the .001% student there on scholarship
