Breaking into cloud sales/CSM @Google

Jan 15, 2020 12 Comments

I recently went through the first round of CSM interviews for a GCP CSM role @ Google. I was told by the recruiter that while they were moving on with other candidates, the interviewer thought i was a great candidate overall, and she wants to try and find something else within the org, etc

Does anyone within the sales/CSM org @ Google know what they are specifically looking for when bringing on externals? Job descriptions can be so misleading, its awful. I’ve been in cloud sales/CSM at top tech companies for the 8 years.

Customer Success Manager at Google Cloud is about driving adoption of GCP. Generally they are looking for 15+ years of experience with hands on data center migration. Specifically you need experience with the people, process and technology aspects of moving enterprises to the Cloud. You partner with TAMs, Engineers, Product teams to unblock migrations. This is a senior role and using the Customer Success Manager title takes some applicants down the wrong path as far as expectations.

  • Google is like Microsoft in hiring senior people to take these roles. OP, to put it in google context, these jobs start at L6/L7 and at Microsoft at 65/66.

  • I would definitely agree with Skytap. Once the interview started, it was obvious that they were looking for someone with a different skill set entirely.

They are looking for 20+ sales management experience for most CSM roles. 8 yoe would qualify for a mid level (L5) sales role.

Ah sorry. I misunderstood CSM to be Cloud Sales Manager.
