Anyone have tips? Places that would hire someone with only non-Security background, projects or datasets / competitions to do to build portfolio, essential education, etc?

  • Literally any security department at any company deals with terabytes of data and needs data scientists.

The problem is you will be pretty much useless without security domain knowledge, this is not a situation where you can come in without domain expertise, do your import sklearn and fit_predict() and solve all problems.

DJPD78, I completely agree with your point on how important domain knowledge is in cybersecurity and the high stakes environment. How are things at PANW? Do you have DS with domain knowledge?

    • VmWare, yes domain knowledge is important, it is what allows you to develop a vision and create an innovative security product backed by ML tech. PAN heavily invests into ML and is driven by people with security+ML expertise, although you dont have to possess both in order to get your foot in the door

  • I know there’s a path for SDE’s into security. Not sure how much it relates to your current position.
