I was at expe before. Totally shitty company. Their engineers are the lowest bar in tech i have ever seen. Tech stack is outdated, disaster waiting to happen. Senior engineers dont know how to develop tech solutions, what the heck they dont even know how to merge code. There is this quota based promotions they are proud of and keep promoting unqualified people to top positions. All good people are leaving behind rotten spoiled people

Compensation: lowest in the seattle area. At expe i was making 140 tc. Now my tc is 300.

I wasted 2 years at expe and missed out on big $$. Totally frustrating working there.

    Dont go there.

😄 look it the other way. Where else can you become a director of technology by working 20hrs a day, be a dumbass but a friend of the top leadership.

Very good company, was very happy there. Pay is maybe a touch low compared to Amazon but benefits are better and work-life is WAY better. They are also pretty into new technology, so you're doing interesting things (unless stuck on a team supporting a legacy app).

And yes, they give yearly bonuses AND stock (you can choose between Options or RSUs).

Source: bought my house by selling EXPE stock.

  • I just don’t like the Expedia model anymore. It’s just a marketing company. Gonna get squeezed by hotels and Airbnb. They’re like a cpg for a commodity product that is heavily dependent on marketing. They don’t sell proprietary technology or anything.

They’re just a middleman and if you’re selling a commodity service, the day you run out of marketing is the day you’re finished.

I’ve thought Long and hard about Expedia. I used to adore the company but I don’t anymore because it’s past it’s time. Too many ota’s with undifferentiated value.

🤔But Amholes only work at Amazon. As @pornstar clearly indicates from his choice of name fir a few dollars more some people go to any levels.

Ah sick company. As many of then have already mentioned.
    1. People at expe are the not the brightest and are usually ones who could not get a job anywhere else.
    2. Comp is very very low compared to other companies
    3. Quota based increments and promotions.
    4. Top heavy management
    5. No respect to developers from management hence no stocks or options.

      1. Pornstar, that's extremely prejudiced and bigoted. I wonder if you represent the general population at Amazon. Lots of people from expe do go to Amazon, Google, Msft, Uber etc. I myself recently got an offer from Amazon, but decided to stay for various reasons including personal ones. I should have timed it better.

Every company has superstars and dumbasses working for them. And people who like to get into a dick measuring contest all the time.
      2. True. For a sr engineer, total comp is ~200k. This is at the higher end of the band. Median would be ~180k total comp.
      3. Maybe. No idea here.
      4. Kinda.
      5. Wrong.
