Hi all, I’m a Business Analyst at a gaming company and have 1.5 years of experience. Graduated last may from my Master’s program. I’ve always been interested in Product Management, but got ZERO call backs while I was applying during my masters, so I kind of settled for my current role. I feel like the work I do now sort of aligns with the roles of a PM. Things like: - Working with devs to push out features for our in-house product - Developing a future roadmap for the said product to drive engagement and user value - Developing business use cases for new features/enhancements (which includes discussions with other teams within the company as part of the background work) Apart from the above, my work also includes leveraging SQL and Tableau to develop metrics and report on user engagement and growth of our tool. That said, I feel pretty stagnated with my current job and do not feel very motivated to work. I didn’t work too hard to land my current job, and I’m starting to regret (pretty bad) not working harder to land a PM role in the first place. So I’m reaching out to fellow/aspiring PMs for any tips on preparing and interviewing for PM roles. Few questions below: 1. How do I start preparing for roles like these? I know of a few books that people recommend, but is that the right direction? Anything else I should be doing? 2. Will my current experience be of any help while applying for product roles? On the contrary, will it hold me back? 3. Are there any particular skills that recruiters look for during product interviews? Apologies for the long post, but really looking for some direction so I can take the appropriate next steps. Appreciate any inputs! Regards, Peralta #pm #product #productmanager
I was in the same boat. Your best bet is internal transfer to PO then later PM if your organization is structured like that. Generally BA-s have a lot more in common with PO-s on the operational level, than with PM-s who are more on the strategy side. I've also been a BA for 5 years until I landed an internal transfer as a PO.
Thanks for your input! Like in your case, the PO/PMs in my company usually possess 5+ years of experience, and I don’t think I’m willing to wait that long to transition.. so I was inclined more towards applying outside! However, I do understand that this process can be way harder.

Try to get a job internally as a pm . You will have the easiest chance for upward mobility within your team. Then leverage that title to transition out. The pm is a little bit bigger picture but in a lot of org the pm somewhat does the same job . Recruiters are mostly looking for have you built products from conception that has an impact. Dm me if you have any specific questions, I went through the same route
Thanks for your response, that makes sense! DMd you!
