Does anyone have any good experiences buying a used car from a specific source (ex: eBay, Craigslist, etc)? My wife and I were able to get by with just one car for a little over three years, but can't any longer due to a recent relocation to an area that doesn't support that lifestyle. I'm interested in CUVs, jeeps, and generally vehicles that are larger than a compact. Further, I'd like to spend under 10k. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
cargurus.com is a pretty good resource. Just start looking around at what those cars are selling for in the area and you'll be in a good position to negotiate a fair price from a dealer. Car gurus shows how long the car has been up for sale and a history of its price reductions which is really helpful for finding a good deal. It may also be cheaper to buy a car out of state but then you'll have to consider additional taxes and registration fees so double check what your state requires
My co-worker always goes through carmax
Go to rental car sales locations. They never give you hard time to negotiate. Try enterprise car sales | hertz car sales, etc. Good luck.
Just a heads up, some rental cars may be driven hard and beat, mainly because some drivers may not take care of them the same way they would take care of their own car.
Buy private party. CarMax is going to be most expensive, no haggling means you get ass fucked. Rental cars are cheaper, but as they say the only vehicle that can go places a 4x4 can't is a rental. Craigslist is good, just get a mechanic to do a quick $50 check before you buy it.
Private party from Craigslist is the way to go. Fix a budget and a rough range of models and years and you can set email alerts on CL for all the cars in your area in that range. In the Bay Area, I used a service called YourMerchanic that sent a mechanic to inspect the car and point out any issues before buying. That list, even if minor, will help you negotiate the price.
Try a dealership. The trick to a good deal is being ready to buy that day. They like that, and are more willing to negotiate.
I've even entertained the idea of buying a Vespa or motorcycle, but long term I'm not sure if they're the best option. Further, I live in a spread out area where I could get killed by huge trucks.
CarMax if you like an easy process. They offer fair prices and the vehicles are certified.
I bought a used 2012 Nissan Rogue for 2k below retail price.
You get what you pay for. Beepi.com is a good place to buy refurbished used cars but it's not cheap
Beepi shut down like over 6 months ago...
That's partially true. The site redirects to the company they merged with and you can compare and buy cars there https://techcrunch.com/2016/12/07/used-car-marketplace-beepi-shuts-down-outside-of-ca-merges-with-stealth-fair-com/amp/
