Buying a house next to a transmission pole

Nov 13, 2019 7 Comments

We recently liked a home in bothell, wa. We wanted to buy it as a Investment property
It checks off all out criteria. But some people are suggesting against buying a home next to a power transmission line as we will have a hard time selling it and appreciation will be low. Any thoughts?

This is too funny. We bought our home in North Creek/unincorporated SnoCo almost four years ago, but I had loved a beautiful, updated home in Bothell - before the prices shot up. Totally remodeled; nice, flat backyard; and a beautiful, big Trex deck. The only thing was it was near a power line - not below it but behind the house was a trail and right above the trail was the power line. So, you could see it - husband swore he could hear it, but its noise was negligible.

Long story short, hubby would not agree and the house today is valued at $150K over original asking price - of course, that’s Redfin’s assessment, which tends to be a little overinflated. However, given the facts and the power line, pretty darn good.

There’s definitely a perception about power lines above homes - look up the various realtor posts on the same question.

  • Most homes have power running to them, yes. Except in California where power lines are merely decorative.

  • If you are a radio operator RFI from those lines might be quite awful
