Why is Google pay so mediocre now for L6+?

Why has Google become Microsoft in terms of pay? When I joined 10 years ago, Google was still pretty competitive in terms of pay. Then people started to take pride in getting paid little. With Ruth’s arrival, Google started to abuse this. Google currently can’t sustainably match my comp before L8, a level they wont hire me as SWE.

When you have an ads based business that is looking to continue to rule the roost for next few years investors don’t need you to innovate. At that point you focus on cutting out costs, enter Ruth.
I don’t think google needs to innovate. If you’re looking to join an innovative company look to those like Amazon who are always trying to get better or companies whose main business model is under threat.
When machine is not throwing as much cash, they will first question the leader than ceo will blame the engineers. Zillow story as an example. At some point ceo s seat becomes hot and investors get rid of ceo by putting pressure to board. Pretty straightforward stuff. Most ceo s are Machiavellian hence can stay long term ibms ceo. Or they control the board. Then investors sell and employees including ceo everybody loses.
Google for sure need to innovate otherwise they cant keep the growth. Because the growth in ad market is already factored in. Also investors want diverse revenue streams, look at microsoft, you cant literally kill it even if you want to. It has so many ways to make money.
Another low take is employee != investor. That guy doesn’t understand what an rsu mean. By definition you are an investor a long term investor. Look at your vesting schedule.
Companies use rsu as an ownership and as a golden lock.
