Feeling stuck

I recently got a new job at Red Hat. Initially, I was very excited about this opportunity but the further I get into it the more nervous I get. The role currently works a ton of Kubernetes which is a cool enough technology. The only issue is that I’m not sure if this is something I want to do for my entire life. In other words, I don’t want to get stuck. A huge fear I have is that I’ll get hyper-specific knowledge that won’t allow me to move onto other roles I am more interested in 2 years from now.

My question to blind is: should I stick it out for 2 years, give up now and look for other roles, or try for an internal move?

What do you actually want to do? Kubernetes touches so many layers that you can specialize in one of those sub-systems and gain skills that will be transferable to things outside of kubernetes. Unless you have no interest in infra engineering, in which case you're in the wrong place, so GTFO

Also, if you embed yourself in the upstream open source project you will be rubbing elbows with people from many different companies and will have lots of potential future employers.

I’m really passionate about cloud computing in general, just not Kubernetes so far. I enjoy designing systems on and developing with the cloud. In my last job I really loved working with AWS.

    I just joined myself.
Open shift is actually really cool compared to the previous stacks I have worked with.

I have found the people to be extremely smart, but with open source mentality a bit messy on how the repo and work is handled.

The TC might not be the best, but the culture has been amazing thus far.
The other thing I noticed from Red Hat is you have enough time to work on side projects or other projects in the company so why not look around and start contributing to those?

  • Same situation as you. I started 3 months ago and now it seems this is not a SE role, but consultancy + support. No real development. Yet, TC sucks here! Currently, I'm doing LCs and trying to get a better offer.

K8s is more portable and transferable skill than most of the company’s internal/proprietary tools which becomes obsolete over time. If you can learn this skill well enough along with some Go/Python/Cpp, then you can easily market yourself to other companies (even FAANGs) in future for a big TC jump.

Almost all major companies (aapl, twtr, uber etc) are moving towards kubernetes so there will a be a huge demand. If you like infra, then there’s nothing more exciting and lucrative than k8s to learn.
