That doesn't mean Sundar can ruin the company culture. Stock market can change any day. But once your reputation is changed it might never get back to where it was. There is a limit to how much you can ride on Google's prestige while hiring, lowballing people and not listening to their concerns before the top engineers will stop considering Google as a potential option.
Sundar isnβt ruining anything. In fact Sundar has actually increased Googleβs prestige and street cred waaay more than Schmidt (who was a good businessman).
And he is being smart in paying the right amount and not too much. Unlike doordash and others he has a business to run.
Very few old timers (actual talent) has left. Mostly rest and vest crowd has gone out (not unlike carpet baggers) to companies like RH USING Googleβs prestige more than their talent.

In 5 years it will be seen just as Microsoft is seen today. A safe, low paying, boring work place.
The prestige thing will eventually catch-up with reality to the point where it becomes the place where only tier 2 engineers go and work.
Later it was just wannabe grads and immigrants desperate for visa sponsorship.
MSFT never had the tech street cred like G or F or N. In fact Amazon which lagged MSFT in prestige back then overtook MSFT in 2010 or soβ¦.
