the rich pay close to no taxes on property and charge the working class thousands for rent good job california, so much for progressiveness #bernie2020
The solution to too much government? ... more government!
You realize that poor, fixed income seniors benefit from prop 13 as well right? But fuck them i guess...
What you mention is an oxymoron and a straw man. “Poor” seniors aren’t getting fucked, they can sell that property for a hefty price and have their retirement fund go 4x further in another part where property prices haven’t skyrocketed. If they are poor and renting then yes they’re getting fucked and Prop 13 is hurting them.
Yeah, it’s a myth that a “poor” senior earning $40K a year with a $2M house is poor.
It's not no taxes haha. It's a max prop tax increase of 2%/year. On a 2m house you are paying 30k a year in taxes which isn't close to "no taxes". But yes prop 13 is awesome and a great path to building wealth.
Close to no taxes. As in 1.5M house paying 2k/year.
Taxes in California are already too high, we need a prop 13 for other taxes too...restrict income, sales etc taxes and contain this welfare state. Get rid of rent control as well.
But then the government would actually have to budget efficiently!
Look the biggest problem with prop 13 is that everyone’s vote isn’t equal. We all vote on fixed-rate prop taxes for schools, water, infra etc. Granny next door gets to pay $20 more per year while you have to pay $200 more on the same valued home. It’s inequity at its peak. New families/homeowners are burdened with paying for all the shit old people vote for
But in a few decades you will be old too and glad to only be paying 200 when you are on fixes income and your neighbor is paying 400 no?
Straw man (1) I aim to save enough today so that tomorrow I don’t have to lean on society for help (2) no one is entitled to property ownership in a hot market with HCOL like CA (3) I could pay less in taxes by moving to an appropriately sized home for my needs in old age Again you don’t seem to understand the compounding inequality this generates. It’s not for the betterment of society.
Bernie bros have to be the dumbest mofos on the planet.
Just wishful thinkers who think they found their messiah.
It promotes generational wealth and hinders social mobility. Repeal this garbage!
California already has some of the highest sales and income taxes in the nation. How much money does the state need?
Yeah, our salaries go up at the rate of inflation so then why should property tax go up more than inflation. Thats the idea behind prop 13 and is totally valid even today.
Property taxes have to increase with market values to keep track of the cost of living. You can’t pay teachers with inflation, otherwise they get priced out.
Bernie will remove prop 13?
No but you bet he’ll tax that rich ass
That will include RSUs I’m afraid
