I'm a total stock noob. I don't have enough time to figure it out.

General guidance online seems to say "don't have all of your money in one stock because you're overexposed if that stock dips/tanks"

My colleagues at Amazon say "never sell AMZN because it's always going up like crazy"

AMZN is definitely consistently growing way faster than the standard indexes/ETFs such as VTI, VTSAX, etc.

I wouldn't be investing directly in any specific ETFs, but would put my money in WealthFront and depend on Robo Trading.

When do you trade growth for safety? Is it just when I get old (I'm currently in my 30's)

Get the Bogleheads Guide to Investing and you will be set. A 3 or 4 fund portfolio of index funds is all you need. People try to make investing seem harder than it is to take your money. Fancy products and overpriced services you donโ€™t need.

  • I think big tech will beat the index over time, but will crash harder on market dips. Higher volatility in general. One option is to just spread some of your stock over FAANG/Microsoft rather than only do Amazon. Will probably give you similar returns with less risk.

  • I've been using wealthfront since the past 5 years, so I think I'm qualified to answer a part of your question.
Personally I like the robo advisor platform. They even introduced the feature of you selecting your own portfolio and they'll just invest for you. Kind of like M1. The reason I like it is because it keeps emotions out of the picture. I set it to auto invest a certain amount every week. Their fee for this is 0.25% which in the grand scheme of things is okay with me.
If you go ahead with their own choice of portfolio, that's fine too. It's properly adjusted based on how aggressive you want to be.

How good are the returns? Also what is the 0.25% fee for? Brokerage service?

    • 0.25% is for using their service. Their automated tax loss harvesting is quite good and it more than makes up for the fee.
Returns depend on what profile one sets. I created an aggressive profile for myself by concentrating more on tech etf's. So naturally they've been very good.
