CMU rank: 1 CMU cost: $49k, plus 16 months of full time study without income GA Tech rank: 9 GA Tech cost: $5k, while working full time and not foregoing any income. The ML courses look quite similar in both universities. NOTE: Georgia Tech's online MS in CS with the ML specialization consists of exactly the same courses as the full time in-person MS CS program. Assuming you were admitted to both programs and wanted to pursue an MS in ML, which would you pick?
Online courses in ml are a scam. Sure they'll help you learn that new js framework - but learning a new field from scratch needs time.
I agree that many online courses are junk. But this is GA Tech's MS CS program, with the ML specialization. The online and full-time in person MS CS programs have exactly the same curriculum, as far as I can tell.
You should redo your HW. No the course offerings are different and to succeed in ML isn't going to be to enough. It requires some serious deep understanding of math and why everywhere.
Wait, OP. CMU offers online master now? Can you share the info link?
It's in person.
OMSCS is a massively tough program. If you are willing to study 40 hours plus per week while working full time, go for the online version
Why don’t you take part in kaggle?
I have, some. Is that a better path to becoming a ML SWE than getting a MS CS in ML, assuming that at best I place in the top 10%? Why or why not?
Is CMU also a terminal degree? If it is, pick GA tech.
What do you mean a terminal degree
A terminal master is one you cannot use to advance to Ph.D. Typically it’s less research heavy.
Why do you want a masters? Is it because you are interested in learning more and willing to pay a lot to do so? If not then I don’t know why you would be taking it because it’s not the best way to move up in this industry
I want to transition into an ML SWE role without taking a pay cut or moving to a lesser company. $5k is cheap, especially when the company pays for it
To those who picked CMU - why?
You'll get job offers in research or SWE ML way before you finish your master's, the CMU name in ML is very attractive for FAANG, a good friend of mine finished his MS in ML there and got offered the ability to build his own team at Google on ML
I mean you are just attributing that to the CMU degree which is unlikely to be true. Your friend was likely just an outstanding candidate... and not chosen to do that because google was blown away by his masters from CMU Georgia tech is a top 10 school in CS and ML Is that difference (CMU vs gtech) worth $50k + full time commitment? Prob not
My coworker did the online MSCS in ML course from GA Tech and now works in ML at a FAANG.
As a researcher or just a SWE?
SWE. I mean I think that’s where he wanted to be anyway.

How many times are you going to ask this? Check out this post! "Possible to pursue GA Tech online MS CS while working at Google? (Tech Careers)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/EpzJdoz6
This is a totally different question. Can you read?
I can! Thanks for keeping your stereotype in check. They exist for a reason
