Considering Corp. Counsel offer from Amazon (L6). Recruiter said they spoke to hiring manager, and that relocation to VA is required.

My understanding is that Amazon aren't back in the office yet, and this team only plans on going 1 - 2 days once they do go back. Yet they still want me to move shortly after starting. I'd really rather not move at all.

Any chance I can successfully push back on relocation? or will they revoke my offer if I say I won't move? Any other options available to me without losing out on Amazon?

Managers are getting tremendous pressure/incentives to hire in the DC area, so it would be hard to drop the relocation requirement. You’d have to be really highly valued, or the position would have to be proving hard to fill (has it been open for a very long time?). You can always ask, but I wouldn’t give an ultimatum unless you were prepared to lose the offer.

That’s only an engineering thing afaik. Once you start, internal transfers to another legal team are definitely possible and not too difficult, but you can only do that once you’ve been there for a year I believe

You can transfer the first week if you want. The better teams may require 1 or 2 technical interviews, and you'd probably need an explanation about why you are changing so quickly.

Best thing to do is to probably ask to have like 3 months to complete the relocation (they shouldn't require you to go right away especially since most people are still wfh), then after a couple months change to a remote only team and just say it wasn't a good fit or you had some personal situation change that requires you to be remote.

I am a Legal Manager at AMZN. It really depends on the Manager. If I was hiring you I wouldn’t care where you’re located, provided you’re attending the same meetings as the team you’re supporting. Also, in Legal you can’t transfer until after 12 months. That being said, how would your manager know where you are located, especially if you’re willing to travel to attend the office when they return?

Was wondering same thing... Wasn't sure if they track whether I've used the relocation pkg or my IP address. But if it's don't ask / don't tell, then maybe it can work out...

It's per director/manager. I've seen a decent amount of orgs have a 1 day in the office suggestion. But the general protocol is close enough to the office where you can get there within a days notice.

This will depend on your manager only.
