Hello, I’m planning to quit my job in couple of weeks and planning to drive from Florida to West Coast for a new job. I was looking for health insurance during the employment gap (2-3 weeks approx) and came across COBRA. I understood I can avail the group insurance provided by my old employer provided I pay the entire insurance premium. Do you know if COBRA is applicable for someone on H1 visa? If so, any idea how should I sign up for it? Anyone who did this while quitting their job at Oracle? Appreciate if anyone can let me know the procedure at Oracle?
I don’t think COBRA has any dependency on type of visa or residency status
Cobra is pretty expensive though
Why not just take a vacation then quit by email?
You also have 90 days to activate COBRA from the end of your employment AND the opportunity to back-date the activation. So if you’re just worried about a catastrophic health event, I’ve often gone without insurance for those days/weeks with the knowledge that I can pre-date my activation is something happens.
Thanks for the replies everybody.
If you leave at the beginning of the month, you are covered for the rest of the month by your previous employer. You don’t need to buy cobra. Since it’s just 2 weeks, you can think of planning your departure at the beginning of the month from your previous job.
No. This is misleading information. Only certain plan / employer combinations offer this.
