FB contract v. Twitter

This might seem silly but any relevant thoughts are welcome. Non-engineer/tech.

I am on a recent contract at Facebook and interviewed with Twitter. I haven’t gotten an offer yet but I think it’s a very good possibility since the recruiter wants to talk things through.

There are health/fertility/wellness benefits I’m very interested in I know FB offers but I’m not sure if Twitter does the same. I really like the FB team but it is a contract and I still haven’t been able to speak with my manager yet still about the odds or timing of a potential conversion (though this has happened recently on the team). I don’t know how to even compare these because there are so many uncertain variables with the contract but if I had the FTE at Fb I think I’d stay. TC is more at FB than what I think Twitter would offer from initial range numbers from the recruiter (fb $125/hr through year v. Est $200k). But it’s hard to even compare them. Thoughts? #tech

I would assume FT @ Twitter would still pay out better than contract @ FB, but I could be wrong. Check out Twitter’s healthcare and see how they cover fertility benefits, if their health insurance plan is good enough you’d be surprised how much insurance will cover

Well the contract might actually be at least equal or more. But yeah it’s hard to compare. Yearly Fb face value would be $260k. But Twitter might increase more than $200 face value because of better healthcare. Also I’ve moved to a LCOL area from VHCOL and I think both would let me stay remote.

  • How are you getting FB benefits as a contractor - or are you in a rotational program?

I don’t think you get most of those benefits as a contractor at FB, they’ll be under your staffing agency. Conversion is never guaranteed. I’d go with Twitter, I hear WLB on average is far better there.

  • It's a contract at a good company vs an FTE role at another good company. FB may decide not to renew your contract next half and you'll be dead in the water. I had a similar experience with Mindtree vendors that were rockstars, one day MSFT decided to cut all vendor staff from a large swath of the company and these folks had nowhere to go. Take the full-time job and get it on your resume. After including 401k / PTO and stock, Twitter TC might be more than what you're making and it'll be equally good for you to apply and get a job at FB in the future without losing the Twitter opportunity. Once you actually get the offer, bringing it up with the manager might do the trick as well. FB moves super fast, so they may make it happen in a week if everything aligns.

This speaks to my anxiety. The team does seem really good though I have trust issues…I’m only like 1.5 months in but they extended the term previously. I dislike the uncertainty but the team does have a lot of work now. And there are also a couple people going on leave until at least early next year. I don’t know how to even bring this up with manager since they’d told me there were headcount issues when I interviewed…but my skip level has mentioned in passing that HC is discussed in august/September. I don’t know.

    • Once you have the Twitter offer in hand, make the move with the manager. Also nothing would stop you from joining when the head count will be approved. Given how hiring is going now, even if they did open a position, it may not be certain that you would beat out the rest of the candidates to get the job. I would say this to myself too. If I were to interview for the role I am in, I may not get it again given how much randomness and luck there is in a FAANG job interview.
