I’m concerned about all of the CS related subjects I’ve learned about going to waste in the front end world, but was also curious if it’s possible to have a high paying and rewarding career in this field. I enjoy it, but would also enjoy more challenging work in the back end. Some background... i interned for 5 different companies while in school and finally graduated June 2017. Before graduation I interviewed with Google and a few other top companies, but didn’t get past the 4th interview at Google. I ended up taking a full time position at the company of my last internship and have since been promoted to a “mid level software engineer”. I love it here. It’s an awesome company with great people but the work has gotten somewhat boring and I’m worried I’m not utilizing my talents and knowledge of CS because of the nature of frontend work. Is it possible to have a fulfilling and challenging career in the frontend world? Will I have a tough time getting into one of the big companies (very interested in Amazon now) in my current position?
what’s more challenging work in your opinion? talk to your boss for career interest. If they want to keep you they might be able to find some roles within the company, unless you really want to get out of there which you don’t seem to.
Yeah, I’m comfortable here of course, but that’s never a good thing right? ;)
You went to UWaterloo but didn’t get into Amazon wtf
I didn’t go to Waterloo. Where did you get that information?
Oh I just assumed that from 5 internships
Regarding front end comp. You can get paid just as much if your good. I consider myself front and and get paid more than my backed peers generally.
Isn’t everyone at a level at Google paid about the same?
Thrrrrpppt, could you share a bit about the kind of work you do at G on the front end?
Try backend, with vaseline
Haven’t heard that one before 😂
I’ll tell you in 8 years.
Challenging is as much as you can make it. Want to write virtual machines? Glimmer.js is transforming the way we think about templates by thinking tags as virtual machine op codes. Want to write glsl graphics? Regl is changing the way we write WebGL codes by making it reactive. Animations are on the more math intensive side too.
That’s good to know. None of those sound too exciting. Maybe that says something 🤔 I appreciate the input :)
