Current Amazon Level - L6
Current TC - 290K, as per prev years W2.
Yoe - 5.5

MSFT offer, after a couple of rounds of negotiations on level/TC

Level L64,
Location - Redmond, Azure Compute Org

Base 195.... might be able to get it to 200k
Sign on - 100k/2 = 50k/year for first 2 years
RSU - 400k/4 years = 100k/year

Target bonus - 0-30% = Expecting 15% = 30k
Refresher - 🄜

New projected TC - 380 for first 2 years then 330 for next 2 years.

L65 is not possible as per the recruiter.

Questions:
1. Is it a good offer from TC/Level perspective, given I'm L6 at Amazon right now(since 1 year now) considering both present and future. My best bet for this year's rating is HV2.

2. With the current rumors around Amazon increasing TC bands and giving bonuses, will it be a wise choice to move to MSFT with the above TC?

3. Can I again revert back to Microsoft to ask more? I'm a bit skeptical on this since they already told that they'll anyway need higher approvals for this offer itself, so not sure if it'll turn them off to even ask more.

4. What should be the motivation for me to move to MSFT, or the opposite viewpoint as well - Why shouldn't I move to MSFT?

Thanks.

First of all, congrats on the offer!!

Secondly, it depends. I'm surprised an L6 doesn't get an interview for L65? Or were you downleveled?

I don't know how much more RSUs you can push, but you can always try. I think Microsoft is a great company overall! A lot of good benefits and WLB. In terms of Azure Compute, it just depends. I'm in it and I personally don't like it. We've had a couple reorgs already and depending on the team, the work is kind of boring. I definitely think the distributed system is pretty cool/amazing, but the pushback by older folks here is pretty strong. It's the "if it isn't broke, don't do anything new"mentality.

But good thing is, moving in betweens teams in Azure Compute is super easy. They have this new "fungibility" thing where you can spend 20-30% of your time with another team to try.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. I sadly can't help you with the TC band/level since I'm not quite there (just got L63).

New grad at Vmware before joining Microsoft(with some in-between stints).

Came in as L62 a year ago with 2.5yoe. just got the L63 promo. My team is brand"new" (old team left). I picked up a lot of high visibility projects and was tech lead on all of them (2nd person to join the team). Worked with 2 partner level architects on projects. They actually were the ones to push my promo lol super grateful to be in this position!

I just got an offer for Sr. Software Engineer. Didn't ask about L63 or 64 and haven't negotiated yet. But here's the breakdown:

    Base: 170
    Signon: 25
Stock: 115 (vesting period isn't mentioned so I'm confused if it's over 4 years or something else, it says Microsoft's 2017 Stock Plan 🤷)

    YOE: 8

How much can I negotiate up to? @OP, what was your original offer so I can ask for something reasonable?

  • L64 here. OP, You have an amazing offer.

Here’s my TC (joined from Europe, 2 years ago on L1 visa. Been with msft for like 8 years).

    10 yoe: 180k base, 0-30% bonus
No annual refreshers/RSU (ā€œEuropean entities don’t do thisā€ according to HM)
3k RSU sign on (ā€œEuropean entities don’t do the US amountsā€ according to HM)

As a lateral transferee, the US division doesn’t make any additional adjustments besides base.

Needless to say that I can’t wait for my GC and boomerang back in ;)
