People working at Amazon, have you seen a change in culture now that things are getting more public?

  • Why would there be a change in culture? People just like to whine, but the fact remains the same: Amazon pays well above what other jobs could pay. So people suck it up and stay there for the money (they always have the option to quit for a job with better culture, but it often comes at a drop in TC).

    • If it pays less, VWYF and find a better job. If you can’t find a better job, suck it up.

At L6 and above, Amazon pays more than most to external hires. But expectations are very high accordingly. I have seen mediocre L5s and L6s whose managers wanted them gone but they wouldn't leave because they couldn't get 350k elsewhere (for the mediocre L5) or 600k elsewhere (for the mediocre L6). Both had been hired well before the current stock price runup and were way out of band with comp. At the same time, internally promoted people are paid way under market. So that overpaid L5 was making quite a bit more than a recently promoted L6. The pay inquiries are massive, because of the way the comp system works.
