Cambridge neighborhoods

I'll be moving to Cambridge soon and was hoping for any advice on what the rental scene is like there. Eg: do people use brokers. Is Zillow preferred vs Craigslist. What neighborhood I should look at in Cambridge ir Boston. Any contexts like that. I will be working in Kendall square so anything on the red line is also tremendously nice :D

Ah I miss Boston so much already compared to the bay. IMO steer clear of central square (run down) and Kendall square (dull, too expensive). Check out Beacon Hill area for something nice, near Charles/MGH on the Red Line. You could try Porter Square area up north a bit for cheaper but more residential. Apartments.com should work fine to start but also just walking around and looking for For Rent signs is surprisingly helpful. Good luck!

Sounds great. Thanks!

Central is hopping now. Expensive too. Somerville border of Cambridge offers some break in price. Really depends on where in the city you’re working whether a place to live makes sense. 2 miles is not 2 miles, and can take wildly different amounts of time to travel by foot, bus, or bike depending on weather.

A couple other questions would be: how far away is turnaround time; do they generally want leases to move in the next couple weeks after signing? Lastly can I find a reasonable place without going in person first to hunt places? I might not be in the area until moving in for work 😬

Depends, larger companies have set move in dates smaller owners might be more flexible. Typically you’d need to move in within a month or so. If you’re looking remotely options are often limited to more major leasing companies, but I’d recommend visiting first if you can.

Oof ok that makes sense. I'll try to make it out there!

If Cambridge, I would not recommend the Analytica neighborhood.

Cambridgeport and Riverside would be my top choices. Walking distance to G, close to red line, wholefoods, traders joe, restaurants and a lot of green spaces.

Will look at the areas! Thanks
