I’m a fresh graduate. Just received an offer from a company. Could I accept the offer (start date after the summer) keep searching for jobs and in case I find something better before starting say that I’m not joining ? Is there any legal consequence ? #offer #hrissues

No legal consequence. But I did the same with Adobe and they complained to my university and I got banned from using university career websites. Likely Adobe block-listed me too.

  • Definitely but I wouldn’t do it to a company I may want to work at in the future.

    Yes, it’s called reneging.

Don’t worry about it. People that talk to you about reputation and all that BS probably suck. People that are stupidly good at what they do know that they can get another job somewhere else and will tell you worrying about it is stupid. People make arguments all the time that it’s all merit based and shit. Then those are the same people that worry about burning bridges.

Unless you literally take shit and spread it around the office, burn down the building, or get into a physical altercation where there are legal ramifications…. Shit don’t matter. The question is, do you have the chops to be so very fucking good at what you do… that all of this bullshit is just a bump in the road.

No one mentioned it yet, but if your offer comes with sign on bonuses, relo, etc…. You do have to pay those back usually. That’s the extent of obligations to most companies, but please read the terms of your agreement

Just know the world is smaller than you think. People may remember you and setting your reputation is important. Reneging is a stain for sure.

That being said, I know how difficult the timing of offers can be and these things are beyond your control. It’s all a matter of what you are comfortable doing and if you think the job is something you would actually do and enjoy if nothing else did come up.

I might also ask for an extension from the company if you have other interviews lined up. While nerve wrenching, I personally would recommend making a decision on the job within the time allotted for the offer with any extensions. If you think there’s a better job you can get - go get it and leave this one to someone else who may truly want the role.
