Hey guys, I'm nearing the end of my PhD in Molecular Biology (bioinformatics) in Amsterdam, Netherlands, (I'm a South African though), problem is I actually enjoyed the SWE and analytics part of my work a lot more than the biology part. In my PhD I have built some applications to assist in my research and developed my own dashboards for data analytics and statistical tests mainly in python, R and Bash. I've also been teaching myself to work with scikit-learn and pytorch in my free time. I'm interested in perusing a career in a machine learning role, perhaps applied or research is also cool. The dream would be to work on the AI platforms of a FAANG company here in Amsterdam, although I am completely unsure if I can feasibly work at these companies. Ive been thinking about interning, but internships require enrollment in Uni and I'll finish in this year so that's of the table. Did anyone else transition from biology and if you did, how did you go about leaving the academy. Would love to hear your thoughts. #amsterdam #datascience
I’d leverage the PhD and look to biotech companies seeking your skill set as an easy way in the door.
I thought about going to biotech yeah, its definitely at the back of my mind to leverage this avenue. Although, I would rather exit biology if I can.
Yeah you can do it. We have a data scientist at my company (granted not FAANG) who has his MD.
I did this. It took years. You may have better luck since you’re in informatics. I came with basically zero quantitative background, and transitioning took 3 years before my first full time employment. As it probably should, it takes a long time to learn this stuff. Worth it though, I’m much happier.
I am in a similar situation. Considering the pros and cons of staying in bioinformatics vs leaving to a more data analyst/scientist/engineer position. What triggered you to leave bioinformatics field? Not enough opportunities, low pay?

What is the appeal to NVIDIA?
I have worked with some of the best minds who were not with cs background. My wife is also working as data scientist , comes from non cs engineering path. All its required correct attitude and intelligence.
