Can I negotiate after accepting Offer Verbally

Oct 9, 2021 66 Comments

Hello Everyone,

So I got a call from Goldman Sachs Recruiter on Fri eve that I got the offer but they offered very low salary of $60k for Grad Level Analyst role Utah Location, I tried to negotiate a bit that time but recruiter told me that team doesn't have much budget for this role so they cannot give more. As I was super excited at that time, I didn't think a lot and accepted the offer verbally thinking I can talk about this later on.

So I just want to check whether can I negotiate after accepting the offer verbally or it's not a good idea.

Can I say something like this:

1) I just checked the prices of the apartments and it's going way above my budget.
2) My current startup company(who's already paying me $70k) is willing to give me more.

  • DO NOT GO MAKE LESS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES !!! You make 70k and they will pay more at your start up. Why would u take a pay cut and go in a high cost of living location ?
I work at Goldman, we lost over 50 people in my dept since Jan1st. I am looking to leave ASAP. Too much work, ridiculously low pay, shitty wlb

    • THE GS NAME IS WORTHLESS AND NO THERE ARE NO EXIT OPPORTUNITIES LIKE EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT.
I have been at Goldman 3+ years. I have applied to very relevant roles at Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Stripe, Square, Paypal etc … not a single interview was even given to me.

I am now stuck with a low pay, shit wlb, and a useless name on my resume.

    • Not sure why start the interview if the given the fact of 10k less than your current pay. Assuming salary expectation wasn’t discussed on day 1. Next time find out what that is before moving on

This is why you never accept the offer the first day you hear it. Always say that you’ll need a day to decide, even it if was the amount you asked for. Then you have the time to actualize the situation, run the numbers and make a decision without the pressure or excitement of the opportunity.

It's possible if your situation has changed. E.g. you recently got a competing offer. Otherwise based on what you said it doesn't sound like they are willing to budge without a good reason.

      Regarding your points:
1.) Sure you can bring up the housing cost but definitely bring up your 2nd point as I feel like that's stronger reasoning.
2.) The fact that the offer is already below what you're currently making is reason enough to negotiate. But if you actually do have a counter offer from your current company, then even better. And although rare, be prepared to provide proof of it if they ask.

Keeping the above points in mind are you willing to walk away from their offer if they do not budge? I find it easier to walk away from an offer when you already have more interviews lined up. Lastly check levels.fyi to see if this offer is in the expected range for the Utah area.

  • I'd only ever accept less TC if I was leaving for a better WLB and culture.

Isn't GS known for having a pretty bad culture and WLB? $60k seems too low to deal with their bullshit.

Anyway it is perfectly possible to renegotiate after a verbal offer. But you need some leverage.

I did it recently by negotiating for more RSUs. My argument was that at my current company I have a lot of vesting options that I'd be walking away from that are worth a lot on paper (unicorn fintech that hasn't IPO'd yet) and they gave me more RSUs.

But I also learned my lesson from now on I'm never acting super excited about verbal offers anymore. Say something like "the offer sounds interesting/decent when can you send it to me in writing so that I can consider everything more carefully"?
