I'm going to sign an offer, but it's mostly a backup plan. I want to know if I can take the letter to other companies and negotiate my salary with it? Will they be nervous to make me an offer knowing that I'm willing to reneg a signed offer? #negotiate #offer
You don't really need to flaunt your offer letter to show that you have other offers in hand. And you'd be really stupid to make a mistake of showing a signed offer letter to your potential employers for negotiation as it shows dishonesty and lack of integrity towards the other company. It also means that you might do the same to this company and the HM will consider this as a red flag. Just mention to them that you have other competing offers and tell them that they'd have to do better in terms of TC or give them a range of TC that you'd be willing to accept. Although they want you on their team, do show a willingness to negotiate or else sometimes a very high figure may act as a deal breaker.
I see. Do they ever follow up if you mention that you have another offer?
Yes, they do. Sometimes the HM do have figures in mind and if you mention a value somewhere around that range, they might be willing to negotiate right away. In some cases, they also require some time to discuss about it with their team and then get back to you soon. It is pretty rare at that stage to decline a deal for them as they too have invested a lot in finding the right candidate. My advice would be to get a better sense of what figures are offered by them for that position from the HM during the initial stages of the interview (usually the phone screen rounds) For you, I am assuming you have an offer in hand, so you could use that as a leverage but don't straight away give them your numbers. First listen to what they are offering and then tell your numbers to kick off the negotiation process. If your numbers are little lower, then you might have to rely on the other company's work, tech stack, perks, etc to be able to negotiate. You should be able to get about 10-20K more than what was offered, if you negotiate it the right way.

That’s crummy. Any manager worth his salt is going to nope you right away. You don’t even need to show them an offer letter. All they need to know is the amount of money that can make you join them. Negotiation is a two way street. You have power, but so do they. If they think you’re too expensive or a proven flight risk, they can move to the next candidate.
I see. I'm new to industry so it's not always clear what's crummy vs. part of the game.
