I got my first job and make 80k a year (plus sign on and regular bonus). My parents are amazed and think I'm doing really well for my age, but the reality is I am incredibly broke living in NYC. I'm looking at my salary progression and realizing that I'm gonna be like this for at least a few more years and I'm dreading it, unless something big changes. I have a reasonably cheap apartment, but other stuff like 401k (maxing it out), gym, streaming services, food and etc. just eat up all of my free cash. Is anyone else in this predicament? How do you live a fulfilling life like this?
I hear you bro. You can cut down on some of the expenses. Cook at home , no Starbucks, no cable, use only one streaming service. Less shopping,
You should find another job after 1 year.
You adjust your expectations and spending habits to meet your income... $80k for your first job is incredible no matter where you live. I made it in downtown Chicago on $40k just fine when I got started. This is your first job. You gotta earn your way up.
If you don't have roommates then find some. I'm sure your "cheap" apartment is what's eating up most of your money. How much are you spending on gym and food? How many streaming services? We need a full breakdown of your spending to give advice.
Dude, you're maxing out 401k, and can afford entertainment. You're doing just fine.
Lmao right. There’s probably thousands of poor immigrant families getting by on 40k or less.
Youre maxing your 401k and you say youre barely surviving? 😂 If you want to make more money then go to another company.
Are you asking for help with managing expenses or growing compensation? If the latter, there’s information all over blind. If the former, then you need to give more information
What does that mean “latter” and former?
LLJ sincerely hoping you are a student and not an employee at WCPS.
Stop comparing yourself to others. You will be unfulfilled with millions if you compare yourself to someone with billions. Make a budget, learn about investing, create a side project, network, and have fun. The opportunities are endless in NY. Also get some perspective on "barely surviving". Go visit some third world countries.
It's your first job, it goes up from here. Millennials switched jobs on average every 4 years, and the trend now is every 2 years. You don't get substantial raises at one company, you do when you switch. You'll be fine
$80k is below median salary of NYC. You ca expect to do anything with that kinda money. $80k for Dallas is ok.
