I'm on the fence about starting an MS in Comp Sci program because i want to look more competitive in the stack of applications. Is it possible to get referred without a CS degree? Assuming my resume shows competency in other ways. I have an engineering degree from Cal Poly (a decently known tech school).
It is very common to see EE/CE majors go into SWE roles. The Mechanical/Civil/Industrial grads are the ones that seem to struggle the most when they realize they do not actually like their given field and should have gone into CS instead.
Can confirm this as a civil trying to transition, I will say that I feel like background has adequately prepared me for learning CS.
Yes, just ask on https://poncho.app, where most FANG interns are, or https://jumpstart.me.
I’m in the exact same boat as you. I have BS/MS in civil and taking classes prepping for a masters in CS but would rather not if I could just get a job without one. What’s your prep been like?
FWIW, one of my colleagues is a CE graduate, and wound up taking the equivalent of a minor in CS. They said by doing that they were able to get comfortable with app development, but were still catching up with design, databases, etc.
Just Leetcode and learning basic web dev man.
Degrees only really help for you first job. After a few years of experience, the experience is more worthwhile.
