Can someone help me understand how referrals work here?

I've been with the same company for 9 years now (6 as a BA, now 3 as a PM), and I've only ever referred people I know in person and trust to HR for open positions, but here, it looks like referrals are given out to anyone who asks for one? I live under the impression that if a candidate performs poorly, it reflects on me as well.

Am I reading into it too much? Are you just looking over a resume and passing it over to HR for those offering up referrals? #pm #product #productmanager #refferal

  • I look over resume, talk to the person and if I feel I can help - then only I provide referral. Also, I try to see if they are right for the job they are applying (from their resume & conversation). I did it before without any cause & do it now because somebody was kind enough to help me out when I was down. I have always been for paying it forward

At Amazon I can refer someone as a “networking lead” or as someone I can vouch for (former colleague etc.).

For connections via Blind etc, it’s pretty much always the first category.

Follow up question, don't the recruiters eventually realize a referral doesn't mean much from someone who submits too many?

    • If based on that assumption the recruiter is avoiding that resume, then s/he is not doing their job properly.

Referral doesn’t always mean that we are doing it for the money. The true reason for referral programs are connecting right people. But the HR needs to make sure they do due diligence on both ends.

  • At Angi they encourage us to just post our referral link on LinkedIn, kind of interesting. I don't expect anyone's performance to reflect poorly on me. With that said, if you're interested in a referral, shoot me a message!
