Is @Apple the same as MSFT, were Ageism sort of runs rampant? If your white and over 40, your eventually on the chopping block. Just seems every year MSFT has a set of Rifs and the ones rifed are white and over 40. Is Apple also like that or do they value their employees more? Has there been a lot of Rifs or layoffs each year?
I thought Microsoft was the place for rest and vest. My plan was to go there and take it easy with still good pay, but I’m white and over 40. Too late? Shit.
No, common cinfusion, that's Oracle and Ebay
I can assure you that for engineering, if you can do your job with impact equivalent to your level, MS does not give a rat's ass how old you are. I know tons of people over 50 (including myself). I've never seen 1 confirmed case of someone being fired because they were old. Because they sucked, yes. Because they worked on something superfluous? Yes.
I can’t speak for engineering in MSFT, but I know 1000% that the field has it annually. And I also know with certainty, that field managers are incentivized and praised for churn. My old manager, before they left, told me the GMs actively discuss RIFs and have goals for them.
I haven’t heard such things in Apple
I had a white American colleague who joined during windows 95 launch and still at sde2 level. He will retire in 3 years and never feared rif. What's the basis of this fear mongering?
Ah....How bout these many MANY threads on this topic. Here is just one from the summer when a lot where announced and everyone was posting when they received their notice. Again, I’d concede it’s mostly field (Sales/non engineering roles) that are experiencing this. But I have seen threads of SDEs that get assigned to workloads that are no longer working. And as MSFT Shifts direction, rather than reassigning the devs or sales people, they are simply let go. If you’ve been at MSFT that long, you’d have seen your fair share of layoffs there. Check out this post! "Additional RIFs coming @ Microsoft? (Microsoft)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/Zp2CFOYR
@YoDiggity - the RIFs you're referring to, were they not bottom performers that were stagnant in their careers? I'm not talking about quota attainment but more their ability to adapt and grow.
Not common here. But who knows.
A good chunk of my team is white and over 40. What are you talking about?
Get out of here -- you are contradicting the narrative;) Don't you know now it's common knowledge that white men are being persecuted? Everyone wants to fire them or not hire them because they are too good or expensive apparently!
It’s true. My team is literally here to replace technology with shakira law and make white men into slaves
What is a Rif?
Reduction in workForce maybe?
