Hi folks,. I'm currently at Canada's largest telco doing strategy and Analytics. It's been a dream of mine to go liver and work in NYC for a while now. Do the US telcos value Canadian telco experience? Is there anything I can do to get my foot in the door? Would appreciate some insight :)
Do you do overall strategy? Voice, data, wireless (LTE)? I have worked on the CLEC side of the business serving both Canadian and US companies. I concur. US and Canada are different, and yet you shall be able to find a niche by focusing on the company you want to work with in NY (e.g., VZ, VZW, Comcast) and taking it from there.
Yup - wireless/mobility and residential (internet, tv, hp)
What type of strategy work? Corporate strategy (M&A?) or more marketing strategy? Either way, it helps to know more about your experience and what type of roles you’re looking at. Edit to ask: will visa be a problem? That may also change the answer some. Only because the roles you covet may not be open for sponsorship.
Visa requirement is TN1 and I wouldn't mind paying for it myself. Just need the job offer. How can I signal this to companies?
I’m not in HR, nor too familiar with the process, but in general our postings just ask if they require sponsorship (and do you have HR approval for that) before you post it. A quick google search makes it seem like it’s all but a given that you’d qualify as long as you have the job. Verizon has lots of openings in NYC area (Headquarters is ~45 minutes outside the city, regional HQ nearby as well) but it can be tougher to find a role in NYC-proper. I can say the last 2 external candidates that landed jobs had prior industry experience so Bell would probably be seen as relevant/valued.
Any experience is valued in USA. You just need to apply for positions that fit your skill set.
I see you...TC or...never mind. Bell's TC is shit anyways
It's ok for telco
I'd argue there's top talent at the higher levels (>cp4). Again, TC overindex VS other telcos, slightly under index VS Bank and non - MBB consulting. For example, at 1 YOE - Bell TV is 70k. Accenture is 80k. Not a huge delta. Big 4 is probably sub 75k.
Why are you handcuffing yourself to join a telco in the US? Strategy and Analytics can be used for almost any company in the states.
You're right. Tbh I've had difficulty getting interviews or feedback from US companies. Thought US telco would make most sense.
I would definitely apply to roles that interest you. At the same time try to get in contact with recruiters from companies that interest you on LinkedIn. I have had success this way.
Will Canadian citizens or PR require H1B?
TN1 is the likely route
Why NYC? It is quite expensive and I believe none of the big companies have their large offices there.. Comcast is in philly, att is in Austin/Dallas and Atlanta I believe and vzw is in NJ .. you would probably want that ATT job in Texas for good COL
Do not limit to Telecom. They have less appetite to help with visa applications (unlike the tech industry). Strategy roles usually don’t have working remote options. If you prefer a city, just generally start with the major employers in that region...
Yes we do consider Canada telco experience. Can u share your US and canada telco names?
Depending on your value yes. You may find greater value in the private sector as a consultant for multinational companies. Strategy is slightly different in US just due to the lobby and monopoly practices being so different and varying even within the US. If you can translate your abilities, then it really doesn't matter where you are from, you just need to find the US co that needs those abilities from you rather than Americans. Telecom in US is still a mysterious blackbox to 99%, like in Canada.
