Hello Blinders, TC : 160k SGD YOE : 6 Role: Senior software engineer I'm in a dilemma of choosing Singapore vs Canada for longterm settlement. I'm originally from Sri Lanka and currently in Singapore doing a stable job with a startup backed by a billionaire. And I'm quiet happy with the work and been with the company for 3 years, however the downside is it's nearly impossible to get a PR here and have long term plans for the family, my work visa is tight to the company and I only have 1 month if for some reason I got fired/ laid off to stay and find a job. I was passively looking out for a job in Canada and now got an offer from a startup(in Kelowna, BC) with a TC of 100k CAD which is less than 2/3 rd of my current salary. However this opportunity allows me to settle in Canada and get the PR. I'm married and wife doesn't work atm. Appreciate blinders view on selecting one over the other. #canadapr #
Try amazon in Canada - higher comp
The city you got the offer in is relevant. Post that. 100k in general sounds too little for places like Vancouver or Toronto. Also, take weather into consideration.
It’s kelowna, BC
Get Canada PR and go for 15 days to activate the PR. then after 3 years you will be eligible for Canadian citizenship. If PR is just the reason, you need not leave job at Singapore.
I need a job offer to get the PR and have to work there at least 3y to get the citizenship
Lol ... it doesn’t work like that buddy! You can’t just come here for 15 days. Like he said, you need to work here, at least two years on a work visa to get a PR and you need to live here for 3 years post PR to be eligible for citizenship which will then another year to achieve. The road to citizenship is about 7-8 years long for anyone who come here on a work visa.
Once you move, you can get quite a few consulting gigs at $80-90 an hour. That would put you higher than your current payout just that you wont be an fte.
Singaporeans shooting themselves in the head with their strident & crazy opposition to very rational immigration policies by the govt....
Which startup you working for in SG? That's a good TC already
It's Kpler
If you're fine to move away so far from home then go for canada otherwise u can save more im Singapore but life is not that great here, its just work and depends on what kind of life style u want
I did some research and in the long run SG could become a very expensive place to live, especially with a kid and his education expenses.
Yes thats true as well, i had same offer from Vancouver but i chose SG due to close proximity from home
Can you refer me to your firm for SSE ?
You can consider to Australia too. Try to apply to Amazon/GG/Atlassian or Canva here, you might be able to keep similar after tax income. Plus, some company will apply PR for u immediately after u just join the team, ex: Amazon. So u can get PR within a year.
