Cancelling Amzn onsite

Thinking of cancelling Amazon Seattle onsite as wife found a job in the Bay Area. They have already booked my flight tickets and hotel. Is it ethical to cancel now? Would I need to reimburse for the cancelled flights? Would it make me ineligible for future roles in the company?

Tell them why you're canceling? If you feel that concerned, just take the flight and reject the offer if you get accepted

If you have zero intention of taking the job I’d cancel. Tell them exactly why though. However-There are also amazon jobs in the Bay Area, so you could see if the Seattle interviews go well and then later say you need to be in sf.

They need bodies (they have 5k open requisitions in Seattle) and they are too big to worry about the cost of a plane ticket and hotel. Don't worry about Amazon, half the people you're dealing with won't be there in a year or two. You do what you need to do. If you really want to work for them ask to switch cities.

Really good suggestion regarding switching cities

It's ok to cancel since your personal circumstances have changed. The recruiter will mostly suggest that you interview for a team in the bay area and connect you to a bay area recruiter. If you are still interested in Amazon, I would recommend looking up interesting teams in the bay area and send those positions to your current recruiter so that they engage the teams that interest you.

I've heard of Amazon flying folks to Seattle for bay area jobs. Don't worry too much about it

Fly in just for the interview practice at least, if you get an offer you can measure it against your current TC and/or use it as leverage

If you have no intention of taking the role you are interviewing for, call the recruiter and explain the situation. Recruiting and the team that is taking their whole day to interview you will greatly appreciate you not wasting their time and likely help to get you tagged/fast tracked to a role in the Bay Area if that is where you want to be.

Take the interview. We hire for Amazon first. Tell the recruiter that even though you’re interviewing in Seattle you want to be considered for a role in SF.

Amazon ntvo77 Sep 8, 2018

We do hire for Amazon first but an inclined loop Seattle isn’t going to get you a job in SF. You will need to loop again and as a HM, I would be pissed that you misled us and wasted our time. Recruiting is also measured on their hiring goals and SF will be a different team so you are far better off telling them ahead of time that you are no longer able to move to Seattle but still very interested in Amazon. If that team can accommodate you in SF, they will still bring you in. If not, they will work to get you to a team in SF that is hiring.

An offer for Seattle should be the same for SF. The only difference is the HM in SF would need to do an informational call. My team has taken on two such cases because we allow remote work and most teams don’t. My manager was thrilled to be able to get bar raising engineers without having to do as much work.

Your team is the exception rather than the rule as you just stated.
