Disclaimer: I am an international who studied here on F1, worked on OPT and then H1B and now on the path to EB2 GC process (w/I-140). Most of the private schools run like profitable corporations. They care about minting $$$ at the expense of international students and most of the schools are full of internationals(not Americans). Reason: Americans can’t afford these schools anymore. Just like H1B visa depresses wage, F1 visa inflates tutuion. If the US has a cap on H1B visa, they should also have a cap on F1 visa. Agree ?
They should just ban f1 visa. They no tuition inflation, no flooding of H1b and green card system and US will be less brown because Indians won’t get entry </sarcasm> International students subsidize American students’ education. Without this source of funding, most tuition fees would be 2x at least. Similarly, H1b ensures jobs don’t leave US. If US bans H1b visa, the a lot of jobs will move to Canada, India. And other regions where it’s cheaper to get same work done 🙄
2x fees ? Then somebody’s gotta look into why its so expensive. Most of these private schools now operate as businesses.
Caps on H1b is already leading to jobs leaving the US. Just look at the flood of offices being opened in India and Eastern Europe by tech majors ...
Higher tuition for international students on F1 visas subsidizes in state tuitions
+1 . Thats a valid point.
I’m not following how Americans can’t afford tuition, but students from poorer countries can. Schools take international students, because they can charge them out of state tuition.
*rich students from poorer countries can.
That and aspirational middle class students taking out massive loans at 14% interest rates (in India), putting themselves under considerable risk
H1b doesn’t depress wage. Being an idiot depresses wage. I.e the 15$/hr wage without productivity increase crowd. F1 doesn’t increase tuition. The availability of student loan inflates tuition. Get rid of federal student loan program. Watch tuition drop like a rock as enrollment decline
“H1b doesn’t depress wage” nice joke
Why would this be the one case where increasing cheap supply doesn’t lower prices?
