I received an offer for a Software Engineer Senior Associate position
- Base 116.5k
- Sign on 10k
- Bonus 11k max (5-6k average)
- No stocks

2 yoe

Is this a good offer and how much room do I have for negotiating?

Current TC 115k

Thanks

Update:

I was able to negotiate my base to 118k and the sign on to 12.5k. To do this I:

1. Compiled a list of salaries for similar positions from other companies in the area to show that they were offering more

2. Used my future Amazon interview as leverage: “If we can work something out I’d be willing to drop my Amazon interview and sign immediately. Otherwise I’ll have to get back to you in 2 weeks”

3. During my virtual interview I wrote down the specific qualities my interviewers mentioned they were looking for along with their future goals. In my counter offer I described how my skills align with these and the value I could potentially add to the team

While it’s always nice to get more, I’m happy with their counter offer and signed. Very excited to join the Capital One team!

How was the interview? I have a phone screen tomorrow for the same location. I had a little difficulty with one OA cause I was using strings instead of stringbuilder and it required some knowledge of KMP to solve optimally. The first one was an easy max heap question, solved it pretty quickly.

Also, for me personally, that would be a good offer for this area. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t negotiate.

The phone interview wasn’t hard. The questions were basic “tell me a time when... “ behavioral questions with an LC easy and data structures questions. “What’s the difference between an interface and abstract class and why would you use one over the other?” Is the only question I remember because they also asked it during the virtual interview. Hope that helps

  • Work at Amazon and then leave. You'll have a big bump in pay across your entire career by just doing that.

This is the better move if TC was my only motivator but I’m more interested in wlb. My current job is terrible. 10hr days and ridiculous times (10-11pm) to support demos for customers on the other side of the world.

Also, my experience with Amazon has been poor. They rescheduled my virtual interview multiple times and my recruiter mistook me for someone else. I understand these are chaotic times but the lack of organization speaks volumes about what’s to come with working there.

I hear a lot of people say this, but what’s a good timeline? 1-2 years? 3 years? Does it matter?

  • Hey congrats! I just got an offer for a different role in McLean (not an engineering role) - but I was still able to negotiate a tiny tiny bit ( sining & base) - I think you just need to make sure to have a valid reason for negotiation.

  • I think that’s a good offer for senior associate and 2 YOE. Though I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want a bigger jump given your TC is currently 115k.

    • In general, banks offer great WLB to their tech employees. I’ve almost never had to work after hours or on a weekend. Where do you currently have to work 10-12 hrs in a day?!

I work at a small defense company. There’s paid OT which is a plus but working there is hell
